Mining Jobs

India has near about 20,000 known mineral deposits. The scope of geological research in this regard is very substantial. Over the years the government has done a lot to improve mining sector in the country. Efforts are on to modernize this revenue earning sector. About 80% of the country’s mines are located in the seven states of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Gujarat. The public sector, which mostly runs the show for Indian mining industry, contribute 100% of copper, diamond, lead, silver and zinc and lignite, 98% of coal, 60% of iron ore and 50% of manganese, bauxite, chromite and dolomite.
Mining industry in India employs over 1.1 million people. There are over 2,326 private and 292 public operating mines in India. Mineral exports constitute 16 percent of India’s total exports. Recently this sector the minerals, has been opened up for the private sector. Investments in the industry are being encouraged.

The government has drawn plans to make mining industry more competitive.

Coal Mining Jobs/ Geology Jobs/ Underground Mining Jobs
Different types of jobs are associated with mining like coal mining, underground mining, Geology Jobs etc. All these jobs have different requirements and are important in their own way. The more training and education (mines) you have, the higher the level of job you can get in mines. Multi-tasking job profiles, which means being able to do more than one specific job, is most sought after.
Entry level mining jobs require little or no previous experience. Most mines provide on the job training. Minimum requirement is ability to read and write. Those who have Grade 12 level of education can expect.

  • Laborer loads- moves, cleans up, etc.
  • Dryman or Janitor - keeps the mine clean
  • Blast Helper – responsible to load explosives into drill holes. He makes sure everything is safe before blasting
  • Driller’s Assistant - Operates the drill and handles drill core
  • Equipment Operator – Responsible for driving graders, dozers, loaders, trucks, etc.
  • Geophysical Asst. – Operates geophysical equipment and records data
  • Mechanic’s Helper helps to clean, oil, test, and fix equipment
  • Electrician’s Helper helps run wires, maintain and fix electrical equipment
  • Surveyor’s Helper - holds stakes & rods, and carries equipment
  • Crusher Operator – responsible for setting the amount of rock going into the crushers
  • Sampler – In charge of collecting ore samples for testing
  • Grinding Operator - Operates rock crushing equipment
  • Flotation Operator – Operates the tanks which mix chemicals into crushed rock and water
  • Reagent Operator – In charge of the machine that mixes chemicals into tanks filled with powdered rock and water
  • Dewatering Operator – responsible for running the filter that gets water out of crushed rock before shipping
  • Cook’s Helper - helps prepare and serve food
  • Warehouse Person – A person responsible for warehouse and stocking inventory

Scope of Mining Jobs
The Indian mining industry for the past three decades has been progressing at an annual rate of 4 percent to 5 percent. With the coming of private players the growth is all set to increase. So job opportunities in mining offer good career prospects.
