Deciding on an Industry

  • Before embarking on a rabbit farming business it is best to understand the different industries that are interested in rabbits and for what purposes.
  • Restaurants:  Rabbit meat is in high demand for its tender and tasty meat.  Raising rabbits for restaurants is a good way to earn high profits.
  • Clothing Manufacturers:  Rabbit fur and wool is often used for clothing such as jackets, gloves, ruffs on clothing, purses and many other garments.  It is especially popular in colder climates such as Russia.
  • Rabbit Breeders:  Some rabbit farmers raise their rabbits with the sole purpose of selling to rabbit breeders.
  • Laboratories:  Although some may get offended, many rabbits are raised for the sole purpose of being sold to laboratories for experiments and testing.

Choosing the Rabbits for the Farm

  • Before you go out and buy a bunch of rabbits, it’s important to know which of the above industries you will be targeting.
  • Study the different breeds of rabbits to become familiar with their wool and fur as well as what kinds the different industries prefer the most.
  • If you are considering clothing manufacturers, white rabbits are the most common.  White rabbit fur is the top selling of all rabbit fur and wool in the clothing industry.

Starting the Farm

  • Once you have decided upon which breeds and types of rabbits you want to farm, it is time to decide how many rabbits you should get to begin and how to take care of them properly.
  • A small rabbit farm can consist of anywhere from fifteen to a hundred rabbits.  If you are new to this type of business, it is best to start of small and learn the business and then expand as you are financially able to do so.
  • Rabbits do not do well in extreme climates and temperatures.  Providing a pen, usually surrounded by chain link fencing will be adequate for proper ventilation and ease of cleaning.  Be sure to have enough water and food in proper containers for the animals.
  • Rabbits are burrowers so be sure to have enough bedding material for them to make their nests and be comfortable.
  • Check with your local state, county and city laws and ordinances for any special licenses or permits you may need.  If you plan to farm rabbits to be sold at laboratories you will need an additional special license and special rules and regulations to follow.
